Actor Joaquin Phoenix slammed the meat and dairy industry after he flew across the United States to address a climate change rally in Washington with actress Jane Fonda.
“The meat and dairy industry is the third-leading cause of climate change,” said Phoenix to applause. “I think sometimes we wonder what can we do in this fight against climate change, and there is something you can do today, right now, and tomorrow by making a choice about what you consume.”
Jane Fonda, 82, has organized weekly “Fire Drill Friday” climate protests in Washington and has been arrested multiple times for her actions. “Greta said we have to behave like it’s a crisis,” said Fonda in October, citing 17-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg. “We have to behave like our houses are on fire.”
Phoenix, 45, acted in the controversial but record-setting film Joker, an introspective drama based on the villain from the comic book Batman.
“There are things that I can’t avoid. I flew a plane out here today,” said the Golden Globe-winning actor. “But one thing I can do is change my eating habits, and so I just want to urge all of you to join me in that.”
Phoenix and actor Martin Sheen were arrested during the rally.
